Using this kitchen island has changed the way I cook. I live in a 1000 square foot home in Palisade, CO. It was built in 1886 and, needless to say, there is no renovating to make the kitchen larger, unless I had deep pockets. This kitchen island fits perfectly into my kitchen and allows for function, as well as style. However, it is more than that, this is a true work of craftsmanship that will remain in my family for generations. Coming from a time where the giant granite countertop is king, I see this piece as functional art. It allows for up to 5 people to sit or many more to crowd around while I cook. Instead of granite, the main top is a substantial piece of maple. Maple has long been revered among chefs as the top pick for cutting surfaces. So rather than pull a cutting board out every time I need it, I can cut directly on the surface. I use a small plastic cutting board for raw meat. Cleaning the island is just as easy as granite, for everyday mess I use a natural cleaner and paper towel. The maple does need to be treated in order to maintain its quality. By using mineral oil and a towel every few weeks the wood upholds its integrity. This is how cooking was meant to be before the era of giant kitchens. With every use my kitchen island shows the love and dedication I put into each of my meals. I look forward to cooking for my daughter using this island. I hope to teach her how to cook on this island and in turn gift it to her one day.

Our island has shifted the entire focus of our home to the kitchen. We live in a 1,300 sq. ft apartment and the island has transformed our kitchen into a functional workspace and area for entertainment. In the past when planning dinner parties for guests, I would rush to prep the food before anyone arrived. I would feel pressured to have everything done early so I could enjoy their company and not be isolated to the kitchen. Don’t get me wrong, I love the kitchen, I love to bake and try new recipes, but when I feel isolated and by myself I lose some of this enjoyment and suddenly my dinner party becomes a chore. The size of the maple butcher block almost doubles my working space for cooking while placing my guests just above the culinary show on the incredible black walnut bar. When we received the island we were extremely surprised by the the sturdiness and and quality of its build. With live edges and small accents, the attention to detail is beyond anything you will find on the market today. We intend to pass down our island for generations to come as a family heirloom. For us this purchase was not intended to be a “showpiece” that gathers dust but rather an investment in a lifestyle filled with good food, laughter, and memories made in the kitchen.
